Just imagine what effect it would have on us if people made an effort to smile, truly smile, rather than, at best, look sullenly inscutable and, at worst, look like you'd just set fire to their trousers...without asking. If you make the very small effort to smile at people warmly and genuinely, those you smile at are very likely to react more warmly to you and, in turn, this will make you and them feel better about the world. And that would make them smile more and therefore make you smile, etc, etc.
So, SMILE...with your eyes and not just your mouth. One, it will make you feel happier because of the positive chemicals such a simple act releases in your body and, secondly, it will relax other people who are more likely to be better disposed towards you which, in turn, will make you feel better because of how they react to you.
Of course, there are many different ways to smile. The maniacal or the sour & superficial will have the complete opposite effect. Now, when you’re walking along the street or along inside a building, whether at work or socially, try smiling at someone who catches your gaze. Mind you, do it warmly and naturally and try not to look as if you’ve just escaped from a psychiatric unit for the terminally unnerving. They’ll just want to call security and you’ll put them off. But if your smile has a warm and relaxed subtlety to it and you smile at them briefly and courteously, you’ll sometimes be pleasantly surprised by how they react to you. If it’s a man or woman who appeals to you, you’re more likely to grab their attention ... and even their phone number ... and a date!
