A New Arrival!!

On Sunday my little sister Sophia's second child was born, weighing in at a healthy 8lb 14oz. And, like his uncle Seán, he made sure he appeared just in time for afternoon tea! He has been named Ludovico (Ludo) Luigi Edward Canonaco – the Edward part was named after me...it's my middle name –and he has a mass of dark hair and is a movingly wondrous little creation to behold and cuddle.

I already hopelessly adore his big brother James who, at two and a quarter years old, is already trying to rule the roost. Ludo's birth – I held him about 17 hours after he was born – was just as magical. I still can't get over the bewitching delicacy of his little hands and fingers and his toes. Then there's the amusing fast paced pouting that babies apparently do. If not, then Ludo's started flirting too early.

As I was holding him, amidst the little squeaks and cautious and tired opening of his eyes from time to time, I wondered how he would grow up and what he'd grow up to be. I prayed there and then that he'd be happy, kind and brave, that he'd have an enriching life that touched others as much as it enlivened him. At least with Ludo, like I'm already enjoying with James, I will continue to have a part in the way he shapes himself. I can't wait.
